a typical day at a malala lodge

Six thirty in the morning and the sun begins to rise over the magnificent Rufiji River; the sounds of the waking hippo’s echo it the early morning light. It is the start of another exciting day under the African sky.

Step onto your balcony for a freshly brewed cup of coffee and watch the crocodiles slowly awaken to a new day.

Then it is time for the adventure to begin, join us on a game drive with our experienced guides who have worked and specialised in the Selous for a number of years. Today you will hopefully see a lion kill or a giraffe nursing her new born calf; the opportunities are endless and no two days will ever be the same that is the magic of Africa. In nature’s playgroup we are simply spectators to a world full of miracles.

After stimulating your senses with the sounds and visions of Africa let us serve you  breakfast in one of our numerous stunning locations surrounding the lodge. The choice is yours, maybe today a breakfast next to the river, maybe a breakfast next to a watering hole or even in the middle of the bush.

After your game drive it’s time to relax: maybe read a book next to the pool, relax on the riverbank and discover the amazing birdlife, sip  a glass of wine on your private deck while watching the animals below, enjoy a massage at the spa, the choices are endless .

After lunch why not explore the Selous by going on either a boat safari or a walking safari. On a boat safari while cruising  down the Rufiji River it is not unusual to see giraffe walking slowly along the river bank and elephants wallowing in the mud with their calves. The sand banks of the river provide an uninterrupted view of the game as you slowly drift past the wallowing hippos and the crocodiles lazing in the afternoon sun.

A walking safari allows you to breathe and experience the sounds of Africa. Walking to a waterering hole you can feel your pounding heartbeat; this is a true African experience. Break up the walking and sit for a while enjoying glass of wine and a cheese platter while watching the game drink from one of the numerous fresh water seasonal watering holes.   After an exhilarating afternoon it’s time for sundowners watching the sun set behind Stiegler's Gorge; one of the Selous' famous vistas. You can watch the sky changing colors from the lodge deck or from your rooms private deck  or even from the riverbank next too the rapids. The choice is yours.

Why not indulge yourself with a bubble bath in your Victorian ball and claw bath that has uninterrupted views over the river, or enjoy an intimate glass of champagne from your private plunge pool.

After a wonderful meal and sharing your days experiences whilst sitting around the camfire take a final look up at the African sky where the brilliance of the stars will leave you breathless.
